An oversized hole can let the base sink
Cupcake liners vary in taper and stiffness. A nominal diameter is not enough to approve insert fit; test the actual base or an accurate representative.
The cupcake box uses a separate insert to locate several cupcake bases below an opening lid. The insert should support the bases while keeping frosting clear of the lid and neighboring cakes. Cup count is only one dimension of the brief: base diameter, taper and decoration shape determine the hole layout.

The starting material direction is Paperboard with reviewed insert. The handle or opening direction is Tuck or window carton. Branding can use custom print. These choices need to be read together: the illustrated construction sets the product direction, while your packed contents determine the final dimensions and reinforcement. Provide cupcake base diameter and decorated height for hole spacing and lid clearance.
Provide cupcake base diameter at the point where it sits in the insert, overall decorated width and total height. State the number of pieces and row arrangement. Check the tallest topping above the seated base rather than measuring an empty baking cup.
| Decision | Starting direction | Check before approval |
|---|---|---|
| Insert openings | Die-cut holes matched to the cupcake base. | Review seating depth and removal access. |
| Piece spacing | Rows arranged around the decorated width. | Ensure adjacent toppings do not touch. |
| Lid clearance | Usable height above the filled insert. | Close the box with the tallest cupcake in place. |

Cupcake liners vary in taper and stiffness. A nominal diameter is not enough to approve insert fit; test the actual base or an accurate representative.
Work through this design in three steps: Review seating depth and removal access. Then ensure adjacent toppings do not touch. Finally, close the box with the tallest cupcake in place. Record any revision on the product specification before repeating the check.
The product-specific cost variables are: Piece count, insert geometry and board, carton height, any window, artwork and separate liners or bases. Compare these on the same quantity per size and artwork. Identify whether tooling, the physical sample, accessories, assembly and delivery are included as separate line items. A lower unit price with a different handle, insert or print scope is a different specification.
A removable insert may be specified, but the empty carton must be checked for the alternative pastry layout and any liner or locator needed. Removing the insert does not establish a secure multi-use fit.
Start with paperboard with reviewed insert and tuck or window carton. Add the packed product information and the specific choices listed in the comparison table. Provide cupcake base diameter and decorated height for hole spacing and lid clearance.
